NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home

PPOH

The NRA “Personal Protection Outside the Home” course is a natural progression for the citizen who has obtained a license to carry a concealed handgun.  The main focus of this course is the effective use of a concealed handgun for self defense in the real world. The course picks up where the course required by the law left off. The course is presented in two levels*, “Basic” and “Advanced”. The Basic course coverers the following topics:

  • Presentation from a concealed holster, purse or other device
  • Utilizing cover and concealment outdoors
  • Shooting one-handed
  • Point shooting
  • Legal aspects of gun ownership and self-defense
  • The aftermath of a defensive shooting
The advanced level includes:
  • Movement
  • Shooting from low cover
  • Shooting from sitting
  • Turning
  • Prone
  • Instinctive (point) shooting
  • Low-light shooting
  • Engaging multiple targets
  • Shooting from retention
  • Malfunction resolution
Other “real world” issues encountered by the legally armed citizen will also be discussed.

These skills and others presented in this course form the core shooting skills used to counter a life-threatening attack outside the home and safely incorporate a concealed handgun into ones personal security plan.

The Students attending the PPOH course MUST have completed the training required to obtain an Ohio Concealed Handgun license.  Students WITH the required training but WITHOUT obtaining a license will be considered on a case by case basis.

PPOH “Basic” and “Advanced” combine for a 2 day course consisting of 7 hours of classroom work including a written test and 7 hours of range time**

Other requirements for the course are: 300-400 rounds of ammunition, a concealment holster, purse or “fanny pack”,  concealment garment, extra magazines or speed loaders.

* The course is currently being offered as “Basic” and “Advanced” being offered as one class.  Students interested in only the “Basic” portion due to physical limitations should contact the instructor and arrangements can be made.  ** This class EXCEEDS the requirements of the law for competency recertification by including both a written test and a range safety proficiency test
